The curriculum of the Economics program provides students with the ability to understand and analyze the contemporary topics and problems of the Turkish and world economy with the appropriate methods. The interaction of the department with other social sciences departments like political science, sociology and business administration is very high. The structure of our academic curriculum enables our students to be engaged in various interdisciplinary specializations, yielding important new profiles essential for the creative jobs demanded by the modern societies in the 21st century. Specialization areas comprise not only conventional topics in economics, such as macroeconomics, microeconomics, international economics and econometrics, but also contemporary topics on environmental economics and policies, European Union, globalization, health economics and policies and finance.
Economics is the study of making choices. An economic analysis begins with the behavior of social systems, such as markets, corporations, legislatures and individuals. Traditionally, economics analyzes and deals with prices, competitive markets, and the interactions between markets. Important topics such as monopolies and competitive markets, income inequality, economic growth, and the business cycle are still the central areas of economics. On the other hand, the subject matter of economics has broadened so that economics today answers the questions of social sciences. The explanations above show that economics is not just about money, which is the biggest misunderstanding about economics. Moreover, economics is not business. Economics and business are related, but business is professional training ultimately aimed at making profits, while economics is a science that pursues an improved understanding of our social world. Business classes teach professional skills that are useful for starting and operating companies.
Business administration and economics may appear similar because both focus on companies and goods. However, Business Administration is the study of how businesses function, and gives a broad introduction to the various areas of a business. The department aims to give the students a concrete foundation for doing business or to be well-equipped with the current job market. Economics studies the production and consumption of goods in society. It is a social science like anthropology or sociology. Economists may study how individuals forming aggregates make decisions in a greater economy, called microeconomics, or how the economy works as a whole, called macroeconomics. While economics involves business, economists do not study how an individual business runs or could improve. Economics focuses on the broader implications of what many individual businesses choose to do.
You are expected to know some mathematics to do economics. As seen in our curriculum, you will take basic calculus that you need to
Yes. We give our students the chance to study in different departments. You can concentrate on some specific issues and take the courses of the other departments in the faculty.
We have meetings with a number of public sector and private sector executives about job requirements. Surprisingly, they all agree that they want students with a broad educational background and good writing skills, who can analyze problems and pick up new material rapidly. Additionally, some mathematical literacy and computer knowledge is extremely valuable in the workplace. We believe an economics major can prepare students well for these challenges. With a bachelor’s degree you are likely to ultimately have a job where a multitude of skills will be necessary.
